Chapter 15

Silence is a den for the wicked. They lurk in it, steeping in the space between sounds, waiting to unleash their plans crafted out of earshot when you’re sleeping at night. It’s when you go poking around in the silence, that’s when it breaks open, that’s when the entities that were hiding behind closed doors all come scurrying out of obscurity. That’s when they make themselves known.

Bob eased the red Malibu across Gravesend at a reasonable pace just under the speed limit. He was heading for Chase’s apartment which the Triad were no doubt still watching. That’s what he would do, if he were on the other side. It was the logical choice. Humans are habitual creatures after all...

“But one thing I don’t understand, Chase—why am I the one driving?”

“You’ve cleared the auto maneuvers test this year like any other field agent, haven’t you?”

“True. But this isn’t my car.”

“Your car can barely break 70 with the state the engine’s in.”

“Also true. But—” Bob side-eyed Chase who was checking her magazine for the umpteenth time. “Oh,” he said.

“Yes,” Chase returned. “Oh.”

“Is that what you’ve been doing all month away from the Bureau?” Bob said. “What did you, clock up 100 hours at the range?”

“No,” Chase said.

“Ah. Because I thought you might have—”

“It was actually closer to 300 hours.”

He did the math in his head. Bob was good at math, and it wasn’t a difficult equation. It worked out to an average of over nine hours a day.

“Chase, what exactly happened in Binghamton? It’s like you’re trying to forge yourself into a soldier or something.”

“Yeah,” Chase said. “Or something.”

He let out a pent up breath and it rushed out in a big fat cloud that fizzled out against the dashboard blinking 10:45 p.m. This wasn’t the time or place to try and figure out what had come over Chase. She had been an odd duck even before that last case. If anything, the experience—whatever it was—had just brought out more of her potential for questionable behavior. But on the other hand, Bob suddenly felt comforted by the notion that Chase had been tuning her arm into a crack shot. If things went down the way he suspected, they were going to need it. And that’s why Bob had to drive.

He sped up to 60 and did a first sweep of the road outside Chase’s apartment.

“Catch anything?” He asked, once they’d turned the corner, running the block to come back around.

“No. Go slower this time.”

Bob swallowed dryly. Going slower wasn’t an attractive proposition when the enemy had automatics, even if they were Uzis. From close range, Uzis fitted with suppressors gave reasonable accuracy, at devastating rates of fire. He slowed down to 40 this time, his eyes snapping in a series of quick saccades over each parked car on the street, desperately scanning the scene for any signs of life—life that could mean the end of theirs.

“Bob, speed up,” Chase said. He did, flooring the accelerator and peeling out in a noisy
